Design With Less

130 Queens Quay East - Room 233

In October 2018, the UN released a frightening report telling the world something we already knew. Time is running out. We have to stop living in abundance, and even then, it might be too late to slow down climate change and its devastating consequences. As designers working in a world driven by technology and producing products, services and systems that straddle the material and immaterial world, there is a cognitive dissonance between this technological abundance and its impact in the physical world.

Does more technology result in less physical resources? How does our digital abundance impact our environment and experiences? How might we better understand the tradeoffs of more and less?

Building on the notion of “less is more” – a dialogue rooted in design history – this workshop will engage participants to imagine what it means to design with less and identify the consequences and benefits of technology to achieve a more sustainable future.
