One of Toronto’s leading pitch competitions is back! The Digital Media and Gaming Incubator at George Brown College is proud to present the 2019 IT’S A START Pitch Competition.

In April 2019, ten startups will be selected to pitch their ideas in front of a live audience and judges at Digifest 2019. All startups have the opportunity to pitch their business idea, convince the judges of its value, and impress the crowd in 5 minutes for the chance to win cash, space along with an opportunity to attend Beijing’s Overseas Talent Entrepreneurship Conference (OTEC).

If you have an idea for a smart sustainable future product or service, please submit an application. We invite everyone from creative professionals, budding entrepreneurs, new startups, students or recent graduates to submit. Whether your business is a Mobile App, Game, VR/AR Media, Digital Design, AI, or Robotics, we would love to hear your groundbreaking ideas.

There is no fee to apply. 

Submission deadline is January 25, 2019 at 5 PM.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Clarity of Business Idea

Is your business idea clear and concise? What is unique about your business idea?

Originality 

Has this idea been presented this way before? How does your idea compare to existing projects/ideas that address similar issues?

Marketability

Is there a demand for your idea? Why would someone buy it?

Market Readiness 

How much more development is needed? Can you demonstrate market traction?

User-friendly

How easy is it to use?

Creativity & Design 

How is the project executed? Is the overall design clear and effective?

Feasibility 

How realistic is your plan to execute this project? Does your budget take into consideration the logistics, production, technical requirements and other expenditures?

Probability of Success 

With the right investment and support, could this idea become a successful business

Provide information about yourself. This may include your educational background, employment history and related skills.

 

 


 

 

 

Describe the product/service your startup business provides.

 

Outline your startup’s business philosophy and various elements of what makes your startup unique.

 

Identify short-term and long-term ambitions for your startup business.

 

Provide information on when and how your startup business was formed, the names of the founders and the number of current employees. 

 

Identify your target market by determining the demographics. Describe how your product/service can fulfill their needs. Provide any other market research you have done on similar product/service. 

 


 

Business plans must be a min. of 3 pages and a max. of 6 pages.

 

What problem are you trying to solve?

 

How are you going to solve this problem?

 

Why are you different or how are you better than any other competitors?

 

How can you use the IAS prize money to grow your company?

 

Identify who your competitors are and indicate how they may hinder the success of your business. Outline any plans you may have to overcome the competitors. 

 

Include a preliminary budget for the startup business. What are the current funding requirements and cost of product and services? Identify potential revenue targets.

The IT’S A START jury reserves the right to disqualify any entry that in its judgement violates the IT’S A START Pitch Competition guidelines, processes and rules. The decisions of the IT’S A START Pitch Competition are final and binding.

Photography and videography release:

By registering for and attending this event, I give permission to Digifest at George Brown College to capture/make images, including photographs and/or videos, of me for College activities and for promoting the College. I also give permission for images of me to be copied, used, exhibited, displayed, broadcasted, distributed and posted, including derivative works and recordings in any format or media now or in the future. I understand that images of me will become the property of the College, and be kept for use by the College.
